Getting Hooked On Hunting

huntingHunting game is something you can totally get addicted to. I am sure that no psychologist or psychiatrist would agree with me, but to me there is something so primitive about this sport, that it causes some very ancient part of my brain to wake up and say “Hi”!

These days, I don’t get to go too often, but I have no doubt that once the kids are a little bit older, I will be introducing them to this world which has been a part of my life ever since I was an early teenager.

I was the first boy and last baby to arrive, after my mother had given birth to my three big sisters. Needless to say, my father had put a lot of stock into raising me the way he thought his boy should be raised. With hindsight, I don’t feel he did a bad job. Hey, that’s another thing which psychologists and psychiatrists may disagree with me on!

Hunting Is In My Blood

hunting quailAnyway – hunting. Hunting was something which gave me such a buzz, such a high, that there was no way it was going to leave. Even after I got sucked into the whole marriage/career/kids triangle, I still managed to get away – if only once a year, during summertime – and go on a man vs. nature kind of hike. Sometimes, when the circumstances were right, I even got to spend three whole days in the middle of nowhere. I really do cherish those days, since they do not come so often.

You can learn a lot about yourself when you are out in nature. You can tell even more, in my opinion, when you are on the hunt. I love that feeling of waking up with the first signs of dawn, and getting on the move at sunrise. The way the forest changes from night to day always manages to surprise me, and to be a part of that awakening – well, it’s pretty special.

Regardless of whatever I hunt or not hunt (there have been times when I came home empty handed), I always leave the forest with a deep sense of accomplishment and serenity. Like I said, there is something about hunting which I can totally see as addictive.
