Batman Our Favorite Hero

batman 2 20-25% of all mammals are bats. That is one crazy fact, and when I became aware of that I found a new respect for them. My initial thought was that the most mammals had to be rodents. It fits, doesn’t it? Who thinks of bats?! But it’s true. Most mammals are bats.

Which brings Batman into the picture in a big way. I mean, if you are going to become part of some group, you might as well make sure that you have a lot of back. Perhaps that whole “fell into a cave full of bats when I was a boy” thing is hogwash. Perhaps Batman is just using sheer numbers to his advantage.

Incidentally, Batman is one of the only superheros I truly have respect for. I mean, check my man Superman. What has he done? He is a random (albeit noble) Kryptonian. All he had to do was show up, and BANG! – superpowers. He didn’t do anything to earn them. He didn’t suffer for them the way Bruce Wayne did.

On the other hand, is there any chance Bruce would have turned out the way he did if he was getting up to work every day at a 7-11 instead of livin’ it up at his mans in Gotham? Give me a break.

And then came the Christopher Nolan movies. A wondrous, well-planned, well-executed, and thought-out trilogy which actually did put Bruce in tight spots, like being initiated into the League of Shadows and being thrown into Ra’s Al Ghul’s underground pit of a prison by Bane. So yeah, Batman is pretty badass.

Now, back to the subject at hand. Bats. There are these insane numbers of species and subspecies of bats. All nocturnal, nearly all carnivorous, some are into fruit. Some are pretty huge, some are 1.5 to 2 inches long, and all of them are probably creepy as heck. It is the kind of animal you wouldn’t want to meet at a dark alley at night, which – I believe – is precisely what Batman is going for with his schtick.Batman 1

Whether in the movies, the comics, the television screen (you are missed, Adam West), or any other medium, there is no denying that Batman has had quite an effect on all of us. He is one of those people who were forced into battle. A tragic hero, a lone warrior, a silent protector.

A Dark Knight.
